My dad has a massive collection of books. Some of them infrequent and possibly worth some money.

He wants to know how to vend them online... Should he go through ABEbooks? If so, how does one do that?

All counsel appreciated...

why not also create a blog and chat about it nearby allowing comments and possibly sales.
Definitely eBay!

Every month they hold a 'special offer' listing afternoon, e.g. half price index day, FREE index day, 5p fact list day etc. You may want to linger till then?!

It can be expensive to set a reserve price. It's better to a short time ago start the auction of at the price you want.
Amazon are devout... I buy most of my books from half.com, but they are textbook.
Give ebay a dance and put on a reserve price so if they do sell after you know you'll get atleast what you have in mind for it.

Answers:   Amazon.com is the best place. You can actually set up similar to a virtual store and put them all within to see which sells. The problem next to ebay is that they charge way too much to put the items and if its like mad of books its not going to work. Whereas at a "virtual store" i believe you pay by the month or something close to that. Just check out amazon.com and you'll find it.. Hope it helps!
