2) You can ask your current credit card companies to not share your information with other companies.

3) Some credit card companies hold out an identity theft protection plan that will monitor your information and at once notify you if anyone applies for credit in your entitle. This service usually costs about 10 dollar per month ($120 per year). I know that Discover Card have a partner that does this.
Not a bad price for peace of mind.
