I want to set up a small in-home tape studio. How? I want to make CDs of my stories (I'm a storyteller).

I want to make CDs of my stories (I'm a storyteller). I live surrounded by a small town where record studios are rare, and I'd similar to not to have to travel and/or settle up someone to record me. What do I entail to get started on my own?

Answers:   You distinctly have a computer, so you already hold the framework for a home studio.
You'll need several things to produce a "CD Quality" audiobook...contained by addition to a fully clad voice, story, and compelling/engaging storytelling style.
Get a decent audio card (soundcard) for your computer. The M-Audio "Audiophile 24/96" is < $100. Get it. DON"T cheap-out on the soundcard.
You'll involve interactive recording software. "Audacity" is a free download, and it works okay. I intuitively use Cakewalk Homestudio, but there are tons of better option.
Buy a good condenser microphone - inexpensive option( http://www.amazon.com/MXL-990-Condenser-... and mixer near a preamp for the mic. You'll need to spend a couple hundred bucks minimum total. But you would blow that contained by one hour in a commercial studio.
Isolate and sound-damper your demo room/space. There are all kind of cheap and expensive options here. Just use professor google. I've voiced/produced several 30-second commercials using everything from a bedroom closet to a radio station studio, and they adjectives air on AM radio of late fine.
After you get the tape down to your liking. Email the WAV profile to one of the many mastering/CD-copying houses for a final tweak for commercial play. *THEN* comes the marketing/sales/distribution side of the business.
