My best friend works for a small business (less than five employees) here in Iowa and the owner is paying her smaller number than minimum wage. can he do that? If he can't what should she do? How should she approach him about it?
is not legal, any business have to pay minimum wage, his business can go and get in troubles.
this is really dishonest pay packet below minimum wage, get a advocate, sue him.
Generally, employers that gross at most minuscule $300,000 in sale or business per year must comply with the bright Iowa Minimum Wage Law.

However, is she new to the profession? An Iowa employer is allowed to pay a fresh hire an ¡°initial employment wage¡± of $6.35 an hour for the first 90 days of the new hire¡¯s employment.

Is she a tipped hand? The employer only have to pay $4.35/hour.

Plus, nearby are a few industries that are exempt, such as agriculture.

Answers:   IF they are one paid on paperwork with no supplementary ccompensation like commission or tips, afterwards it's illegal. If your friend is anyone paid OFF accounts, then it's illicit anyway, but your friend is in the wrong too and there's zilch you can do being salaried less than the permitted wage when you're being salaried illegally stale the books.

If she's person paid smaller amount than minimum wage ON the books and no other comp, afterwards she needs to call upon the state department of labor
