what does it take to start a not for profit structure in New York State. I be looking to start a organization to facilitate students in colleges and university pay for textbook or more like hold a rental program where the students salary a percentage of the price of the book. how hard is it to start a N-P-O and how would we grasp funding?

I don't know seriously about NY. but I know that within Oregon you can go to the filinginoregon.com and it take you through the steps to file a corp. It is merely a few hundred $ here. You will however need to register next to the feds once you have set up your corp and that also is several hundred a year.
