Answers:
if you have the reciept you are entitled to a discount
You're 'not' entitled to a compensation unless the item is faulty. They might be nice and issue you a reimbursement, they don't even have to permit you swap the item. That is usually company policy though of them being nice.
as long as it is not tatty and you have the getting, they should be able to clutch it back.
some shops though, proffer only exchange, so you best to ask first. you might know how to get a smaller size.
Previous posters are wrong. They don't hold to give you your money pay for unless the goods are imprecise. It was your mistake after adjectives. Shops usually give a credit file in these situations.
I think by ruling that they do not have to hand over you your money back unless the item is out of order, but will give you a credit minute to purchase another item. Some shops will give you the change back. It's discretionary.
Good luck
check the store returns policy. some stores hold a 28 day money stern with reception policy so if its within this time later you should get a full reimbursement
Try this website - it's a UK.gov site and make available you all the info you stipulation regarding your rights as a customer : -

Edit:1
The following info is cut&paste from the above site : -
Your customer's rights
When customers purchase products from you they're legally entitled to expect guaranteed things. Under the Sale of Goods Act:
Goods must be "fit for their purpose". If people buy a pen, for instance, it must be powerful of writing. But this requirement also means that if a customer tell you they want an item for a particular purpose, you should detail them if you have doubts more or less its suitability.
Goods must be of "satisfactory quality" - they must be durable, secure and free from minor, as well as highest, defects.
If merchandise don't meet these criteria, purchasers can claim a reimbursement if they haven't already "accepted" them. Customers accept stuff if they tell you they've permitted them, alter the goods or hold them for a reasonable length of time. They can't, however, reject stock simply because they've changed their mind.
Though customers can't claim a refund after accepting commodities, they can claim compensation. This can be monetary but could be the repair or replacement of goods. If your customer is a consumer - an individual not acting contained by the course of business - they can specifically ask for a repair or replacement.
All customers have up to six years to claim compensation (in Scotland, five years from discovery of the problem). The exact amount of time depends on the product, though it's for your customer to prove it be faulty when sold. But if your customer is a consumer and asks for a repair or replacement during the first six months after public sale, it's up to you to prove the goods weren't defective.
Goods should also correspond with the description you grant, whether it's verbally, contained by writing or in an illustration. If they don't, your customer can lift similar remedies to those described above. It's also an offence below the Trade Descriptions Act to describe goods misleadingly.
Good luck.
It's a worth a try. Just tell them what you've told us.
You can ask for your money fund , don't accept a credit entry , by law you are entiled to your dosh , unless paid by card , later the purchase has to be refund to the card
