Question: what would be the best us grant to apply to for someone interested contained by starting their own business in NYC? and how would i walk about applying?

There is no such thing as a "forfeit for starting a new business". Federal elected representatives gives grant strictly to non-profits and state and local governments. The Small Business Administration (SBA) have loan programs, but those are loans you need to repay, not grant.

The only freebie you can draw from out of the government is training. Some SBA loan programs if truth be told have training requirements (you can't qualify unless you go and get trained).

Even if you buy books on "how to attain grants" or list that supposedly have information on grants -- adjectives of them are mere rehash of what CFDA has, albeit package differently. But still the info is the same - just about any grants for starting a for profit business.

Most of the federal grants are given to specific target groups beside specific requirements (e.g. minority business owners involved in transportation related contracts emanate from DOT - Grant#20.905 Disadvantaged Business Enterprises Short Term Lending Program

Grants are also often given to non profit groups or organization involved in training or other similar actions (grant 59.043 Women's Business Ownership Assistance that are given to those who will create women's business center that will train women entrepreneurs

For private grants, you may want to check the Foundation Center's Foundation Grants for Individuals Online. It's a subscription base website ($9.95 per month) but their opening blurb single says that the database is just right for "students, artists, academic researchers, libraries and financial aid office." Entrepreneurs are apparently not one of them, so I take it they also don't hold listings of private foundations who give grant to would-be entrepreneurs.

If you are a woman or a minority or better yet a minority woman you own a shot at grants.
